NSPS Sponsored High School Math Skill Award
The TrigStar Program Contest is an annual high school mathematics
competition sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors
based on the practical application of Trigonometry. The program recognizes
the best students from high schools throughout the nation.
The purpose of the TrigStar Program:
- To promote the study of trigonometry in high school and to promote
excellence in the mastery of trigonometry by honoring the individual
student who has demonstrated superior skill among classmates at the High
School level.
- To acquaint the high school trigonometry students with the use and
practical application of trigonometry in the surveying profession.
- To build an awareness of surveying as a profession among the
mathematically-skilled high school students, career guidance counselors
and high school math teachers.
TrigStar Contest Levels
- Level 1 is given at local high schools. There is one winner from
each participating high school.
- Level 2 is the state test. Each of the local high school winners may
participate at this level.
- Level 3 is the national test. The state winner from each
participating state is eligible to compete for the National Trig-Star
title

Scholarships and Teaching Excellence Awards
The National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS)
is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2005 Richard E. Lomax
National Trig-Star Scholarship Awards. The Trig-Star Committee met
on July 16, 2005 to determine the three top high school students from
the national examinations submitted by state winners. This year there
were thirty- five winners determined, 33 states and two districts. 32
state winners competed in the National contest. The awards will be
presented in a special ceremony at the NSPS Board of Governors meeting
during the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) annual
conference in Orlando, Florida, April 21 - 26 2006.

Lomax National Trig-Star Scholarships are awarded as follows:

First Place ($2,000): Juwon Lee, Class of 2006, Ann Arbor Huron High
School, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Sponsor: Midwestern Consulting, LLC.

Second Place ($1,000): Fan Huang, Class of 2006, Urbana High School,
Urbana, Illinois. Sponsor: East Central Chapter of the Illinois
Professional Land Surveyors Association.

Third Place ($500): William Young, Class of 2005, Hobart High
School, Hobart, Indiana. Sponsor: Northeast Chapter Indiana Society
of Professional Land Surveyors.

A past president of NSPS, Richard Lomax was the driving force behind the
National Trig-Star Contest. In October 1994, NSPS named this high school
trigonometry skill award in his honor. The Richard E. Lomax National
Trig-Star Scholarships and Teaching Excellence Awards are a few of

SCSPLS Sponsorship Application
A local sponsor is
needed for each participating High School. Our goal this year is for each
Chapter to sponsor at the minimum one High School. If you have a member who
would be willing to serve as your Chapter’s representative for 2005-2006,
have them contact me. I will make myself available to meet with your
representative and work with him on the program this year.
